The story revolves around Karan Shergill (played by Hrithik Roshan), a carefree young man who is aimless and lacks ambition. He joins the Indian Military Academy (IMA) under pressure from his father (played by Boman Irani), a retired army officer, but he lacks dedication and purpose in his life.

During his training at the academy, Karan faces several challenges and failures. However, a chance encounter with Romila Dutta (played by Preity Zinta), a journalist, ignites a spark within him. He begins to realize his potential and discovers a sense of purpose. Inspired by Romila's dedication to her work and her belief in him, Karan becomes determined to prove himself.

As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan due to the Kargil conflict, Karan finds himself compelled to join the army and serve his country. He undergoes rigorous training and eventually finds himself in the midst of the war zone in Kargil.
